Clothed figure sketch 27 - 2011/06/23
After a week or two of sketching, I wanted to know if I got any better, so I went back into my old sketches and found one based on the same fashion photo as I made today. And oh, today I sketched freehand, without any markers on the side of my sketch. I can see I have still a lot to learn, but in one respect my skill has improved, the feel for proportions. The newer sketch on the left has a much clearer pose, while the older sketch on the right looks like a patchwork of impressions, without a sense of general direction. I guess I'm not yet at the stage where I can state something with my sketches, which is important when you want to draw someone from life. However, I'm getting closer to that point and if I keep at it, I should be able to draw a pose with some authenticity and maybe even authority. That my plans to get in contact with fellow local artists have been thwarted by budget cuts on culture and culture education by my national government and I have to find new ways to educate myself, means that I have found new vigor to keep drawing. No government that thinks cultural expression is just for the few artists that are internationally successful and having a strong base in society for art creation doesn't need encouragement by government funding is going to say that I'm not worthy of being an artist. Without the help of a tutor or mentor it will be hard, though, but it's not going to stop me. Suck it, suit-wearing efficiency whores. You will find out that efficiency kills creativity, because creativity thrives in slack space, not in success. Success is always temporary, and not having a pool of less successful (but equally talented) artists is going to be the death of the Dutch art scene, eventually.
